LoopPad MIDI BPM and MC8

After some experimentation, I have my LoopPad MIDI BPM set to 24, which I understand is the “standard” PPQN for MIDI clock. In usage it is a little inconsistent.

  • It doesn’t seem to work at all unless the loop is a minimum length. (Very short loops don’t work)

  • Initially the BPM on my MC8 reads 500 BPM. Once the loop is long enough, it will start to sync with the MC8. Sometimes it is stable, and other times it will halve the tempo every time it loops around.

Could you confirm that the term MIDI BPM is referring to the PPQN? Also would appreciate any tips for setting MIDI BPM, or using MIDI sync in general.

No, the 24 beats per quarter note are already handled in the software. BPM in this case is quarter notes per measure. However, it assumes that your loop that is supplying the clock is one measure long. With 4/4 time and a loop that is one measure long, BPM should be set to 4. With 4/4 time and a loop that is two measures long, then you need to set it to 8.
